With the purchase of my first dSLR...., nude and portraiture will be a major area of focus........

So i am going to have to get a good idea about the basics of lighting.........
Any suggestions of good, example showing books....???

And to start out with a ok beginning set to work with...... what does one get....??

Any specific backdrop systems anybody want to rave about as well..........?? I guess a budget of $1000 or less is what i aim for...........

THANKS to ALL who respond..........

  • Book: Light, Science, Magic. This imparts a way of thinking about light that is a good foundation for you to solve many problems. It also gives examples of different kinds of portrait lighting.

For Lights: If you are using digital you don't need as much light as film, so JTL makes decent low power strobes (flashes) that will be fine. For continuous light, called 'hot' lights (yeah they get hot) you should go for Lowel DP or Tota. These are on ebay used for under $100. Check out Lowel's website. JTL's are so cheap you may as well get them new.

Backdrops stuff cheap and decent are at www.2dreammaker.com But try to find some of their stuff on Ebay. It can be gotten so cheap it makes you feel bad.

By the way, do you know where I can get some DMT? I am doing a photo project where I will engage in shamanistic practices of taking herbs and substances and photographing myself. Art school stuff....
